Closing the digital divide
Rural and remote communities are the most challenging and costly areas in which to provide high-speed internet. Nevertheless, the telecommunications sector, individually and together with its government partners, are making good progress in expanding and enhancing internet coverage to these communities.
For example, access to 50/10 unlimited high-speed broadband in rural areas has increased by over 65% between 2018 and 2022 (40.7% to 67.4%).
In addition, 5G has helped Canada close the digital divide, with mobile rural users in Canada experiencing faster download speeds than rural users in Australia, Germany, the U.S. and Brazil.
